Differential Diagnosis

  • Unilateral vs Bilateral
  • Associated Ocular pathology eg. Optic Nerve Hypoplasia, Infantile Cataract
  • Microtropia with central suppression scotoma
  • Uncorrected refractive error
  • Type of amblyopia eg. Strabismic, anisometropic, mixed

Possible management by Optometrist

  • Correction of refractive error
  • Advice on Low Vision Aid if patient over 8 years of age

Advice              

  • Refer to Orthoptist and Hospital Eye Service if child under 8 years of age

Management Category

  • Early referral for child under 8 years of age indicated in order to exclude any underlying pathology and maximise potential visual development within Critical Period for visual development

  • Identification of underlying pathology, and necessary referral pathways as appropriate
  • Surgery

  • Occlusion techniques: Patching, Penalisation, Atropine
